The turquoise lake

Lake Tekapo’s colour has to be seen to be believed — a milky turquoise created by fine rock flour carried down from the glaciers. Set in the wide Mackenzie Basin beneath the mountains, it’s one of the most photogenic places in the country to marry. It’s an easy, scenic three-hour drive from Christchurch, or around two and a half hours from Queenstown.

Lupins, chapel and dark skies

In late spring the lakeshore erupts with lupins, and for a few short weeks Tekapo becomes something out of a painting. The historic Church of the Good Shepherd offers a traditional stone-chapel ceremony right by the water. And after dark, Tekapo’s Dark Sky Reserve gives you a canopy of stars unlike anywhere else — a breathtaking end to a wedding day.

Winter at Tekapo (July–September)

Winter transforms the Mackenzie — snow on the ranges, crisp still mornings, and that impossible turquoise glowing against the white. Tekapo is the most reliable of my locations for a winter’s snow-dusted backdrop, with cosy ground-level ceremony spots along the shore and warm accommodation minutes away. If a winter elopement is your dream, this is where I’d start.

Beyond the lake

Tekapo sits on the road to Aoraki / Mount Cook, and the two pair beautifully — a lakeside ceremony one day, an alpine or glacier landing the next. Helicopter access into the Mount Cook landings, such as Liebig Dome and the Richardson Glacier, can be arranged from the Tekapo side. I’ll help you plan the timing so everything lines up perfectly, and make sure your day runs smoothly.

What your wedding day can look like

I plan your day gently, with space to get ready, travel, marry and take photographs. Most Lake Tekapo elopements begin at your accommodation, then travel to your ceremony spot; for a helicopter wedding the day also includes the transfer to the departure base, the flight and your alpine landing. Afterwards there’s time to capture the landscape before heading back — always within a clear, confirmed timeline so everything flows comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

When do the lupins flower at Lake Tekapo?

The famous lupins usually bloom from mid-November into mid-December, carpeting the lakeshore in purple, pink and blue. It's one of the most beautiful — and popular — times to marry here, so I recommend booking well ahead if lupins are your dream. The lupin ceremonies are ground-access only.

Can you get married at the Church of the Good Shepherd?

Yes. The historic 1935 stone church is much-loved and available for Christian ceremonies with an ordained minister; the church is booked directly and is subject to availability. I'll let you know what's possible for your date and arrange a beautiful lakeside alternative nearby if needed.

Is Lake Tekapo good for stargazing weddings?

Wonderfully so. Tekapo sits in an International Dark Sky Reserve, so the night skies are extraordinary. A dusk ceremony followed by stargazing is pure magic.
