Eloping in New Zealand

FAQs for Couples Travelling from Overseas

The questions couples travelling from overseas ask most — answered plainly, from licence to recognition back home.

Marrying here, from anywhere

Plenty of the couples I plan for have never set foot in New Zealand before their wedding day — and that’s no obstacle at all. The legal side is simple, the planning happens comfortably by email and video call, and by the time you land, everything is waiting for you.

The answers below cover the questions I’m asked most by couples travelling from overseas. For the fuller legal picture — licence, witnesses, certificates and recognition — see the legal requirements guide, and for what happens when, the timeline and checklist.

The short version

  • Legality: anyone can marry in New Zealand — no residency needed, licence in about 3 working days.
  • Booking: 6–18 months ahead is typical; genuinely last-minute is possible.
  • Money: international bank transfer, with Wise.com recommended for lower fees; deposit and balance dates are set out in your contract.
  • Travel: no wedding visa — an NZeTA or Visitor Visa is all you need. I plan your wedding rather than your travel, but I’ll happily point you in the right direction.
  • Back home: your marriage is recognised worldwide, and I arrange any apostille or authentication your country needs.

If your question isn’t here, just ask — tell me your story and I’ll answer it personally.

Frequently asked questions

Can we legally marry in New Zealand if we live overseas?

Yes, absolutely. There's no residency requirement — you apply online for a New Zealand marriage licence (issued within about 3 working days) and marry with a registered celebrant, exactly as a New Zealander would. I guide you through every step.

How far in advance should we book?

Most couples travelling from overseas book six to eighteen months ahead, especially for popular dates and lupin season. Last-minute is possible too — once your licence is sorted, I can organise a full elopement within 24 hours.

Do we need to bring witnesses?

No. If it's just the two of you, two witnesses are provided at no additional cost.

What if the weather isn't suitable on the day?

If it's unsafe to fly or the conditions aren't right, I organise a safe and beautiful backup location or adjust the timing, working with the pilot and photographer. Your day goes ahead — just sometimes with a different, equally lovely view.

Can we bring family or friends?

Yes — up to four guests, six people in total including the two of you. Small by design, so the day stays calm and completely yours.

Do we need a New Zealand celebrant?

Yes. All legal weddings in New Zealand must be conducted by an NZ-registered celebrant, and a wonderful one is arranged as part of your package.

How do payments work from overseas?

By secure international bank transfer (or local bank deposit if you're in New Zealand). I recommend Wise.com for international transfers — it keeps the fees down and makes sure the right amount arrives. Your contract sets out the deposit, final balance and due dates clearly.

Do we need a special visa to marry in New Zealand?

No — there's no "wedding visa". Citizens of visa-waiver countries travel on an NZeTA (a quick online waiver, usually processed within about 72 hours); others use a standard Visitor Visa. For anything visa-specific, ask Immigration New Zealand directly.

Can you help with locations and travel planning?

Yes. Once you've booked, I help with seasonal location guidance, travel timing, and scheduling the wedding around your arrival and departure — across Queenstown, Wānaka, Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook.

Will our marriage be recognised back home?

New Zealand marriages are recognised around the world. If your country asks for formal proof, I arrange an apostille (for Hague Convention countries) or a two-step authentication (for others) through the Department of Internal Affairs — the documents are couriered to you directly from the government department.
