Eloping in New Zealand

The Best Time of Year to Elope in New Zealand

A season-by-season guide to choosing your date — sun, snow, autumn colour or summer lupins.

Every season has its own magic

One of the joys of marrying in New Zealand is that there’s no wrong time to come — each season offers something completely different. And remember: because we’re in the Southern Hemisphere, our seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere’s.

Summer (December–February)

Long, warm days and golden evening light. Summer is our peak season — perfect for lakeside ceremonies and late, lingering sunsets. Popular dates book early.

Autumn (March–May)

Central Otago turns to gold and amber, the air is crisp and clear, and the crowds thin out. Autumn is one of the most reliable seasons for weather — wonderful for helicopter weddings — and April to early May brings some of the best wedding light of the year. Many couples say autumn is New Zealand at its most beautiful.

Winter (June–August)

Winter is dramatic and beautiful, but it asks for flexibility. In June I don’t offer helicopter weddings at all — it’s a firm policy, because early-winter weather is too unstable for safe, reliable alpine flying. July and August flights are possible with flexibility and pilot approval, and a snow wedding in the right window is pure magic. I always plan a warm, dry backup nearby.

Spring (September–November)

September is my pick for snow ceremonies — fresh snow still blankets the peaks while the weather settles. October and November can be windy, but the landscape is stunning for lakeside and meadow ceremonies. And from mid-November, the famous Lake Tekapo lupins begin their brief, breathtaking display — usually through to mid-December, occasionally into early January, and every lupin spot is reachable by road.

A note on Mount Cook / Aoraki

For weddings at Aoraki, the recommended season is September through to the end of May. I don’t take June bookings there, and July–August is case-by-case. The helicopter teams are based at Glentanner year-round, and every landing depends on wind, visibility, snowpack and — always — the pilot’s final say.

What about the time of day?

Any time can work. The pilots choose the safest flying window, and the light in the Mackenzie and Southern Alps is lovely from morning right through to late afternoon — so we fit the ceremony around what suits your day, not the other way around.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to get married in New Zealand?

There's no single best time — it depends on the feeling you're after. Summer (December–February) brings long, warm days; autumn (March–May) turns golden; winter (June–August) offers snow on the peaks; spring (September–November) brings wildflowers and fewer crowds. I'll match your date to the scenery you're dreaming of.

Can you have a snow wedding in New Zealand?

Yes. September is the month I recommend for snow ceremonies — fresh snow lingers on the peaks and the weather is settling. July and August snow weddings are possible too, with flexibility and pilot approval. We plan snow weddings carefully, always with a warm, dry backup close by.

Can we have a helicopter wedding in June?

No — as a firm policy I don't offer helicopter weddings in June. Early-winter weather is simply too unstable for reliable, safe alpine flying. July and August flights are possible with flexibility and pilot approval, and from September conditions improve markedly.

When do the lupins bloom at Lake Tekapo?

The lupins usually flower from mid-November to mid-December, occasionally lingering into early January, carpeting Lake Tekapo's shoreline in colour. Every lupin spot is reachable by road — no helicopter needed. It's a magical but popular window, so book well ahead if lupins are your dream.

Remember New Zealand's seasons are reversed?

Yes — New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are opposite to the Northern Hemisphere. Our summer is December to February and our winter is June to August. It catches many couples out, so I always double-check dates with you.

With love, from New Zealand
